Bursary Application Tips

It Is important to get your bursary application to the top of the pile and to beat the competition. In order to achieve this, keep the following points in mind and follow our advice when creating an application that wins hearts. Bear in mind that every bursary has a different application process. Therefore, it imperative that before you start the application process, you read ALL the instructions and you take note of the closing date for applications.

When you are ready to start applying for a bursary, remember that you are competing with number of other applicants. Focus on your top achievements such as outstanding research. Do not forget your application should be made up of quality, not quantity.

1.Write a letter of motivation

Writing a motivation letter gives you the chance to provide motivation as to why you should be the successful candidate. Make sure you use a professional tone and keep your letter short and to the point. Include details like who you are, what you want to study, why you want to study it, what qualities will help you succeed in your studies and what you see yourself doing when you graduate.

2.Include a recommendation letter

Look for someone that knows you, your capabilities and your background like a teacher or an advisor, to write a letter of recommendation for you. It’s advised that they link their recommendations to your academic achievements and/or leadership abilities. They also need to identify why they think you are the ideal candidate. Recommenders are meant to highlight your extramural and academic successes. So choose your recommender wisely and make sure they know your capabilities well.

3.Be selective when including activities and awards

When it comes to including activities and special awards on your application it’s important that you include, only include the relevant ones. Access your list and decide which of those highlight your best attributes and exclude the ones that just take up space.

4.Eliminate all mistakes by proofreading your application

Make sure you eliminate all spelling and grammar mistakes; this is key for a strong application. Ask an English teacher to read through your entire application (including the supporting documents) and use your computer’s spell check before submitting it. Alternatively, if you do not have access to an English teacher, get a second set of eyes might see mistakes that you’ve unintentionally overlooked.
